A self portrait done for the two week Event "Past Lives" over on Pixel Brush: [link] the challenge was to create a self portrait from a bygone era, anything from egyptian to 1920's gangster. I had the two concepts up in my scraps: [link] and of the two, I followed my heart, which really wanted the native american indian one.

The culture of these people is one I have huge respect for, I admire the way they live in harmony with nature. Now before anyone says it, YES this was influenced by Disney's Pocahontas. And yes, I'm more than aware that Disney massacred the real history version, but I take it for what it is.. there's some rather lovely moral messages in it that people should take to heart rather than bitching about how 'wrong' it is. So yes, if you tel me it looks like Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas, I reserve the right to call you a ninny for not reading the description. :P

I think of all the portraits I've done, this captures me as I like to see myself. I'm a veritable russian doll of personas, layers and fronts. A social chameleon, I change my behaviour according to who I'm around. In my solitary moments, those I treasure, when I can finally switch off all those other people in me, this is who I truly am. The girl with the colours of the wind in her hair.

Done in photoshop CS over 2 weeks, about 20-30 hours spent.

playing roles can be entertaining, but it's good to be genuine once and a while. sounds like it was a cool assignment :)

That's absolutely beautiful. It really does speak to a person, the colours flow so beautifully, and it makes me wish back for a time when the colours of the wind weren't full of smog...

I have no idea what Pixel Brush is, but that sounds like an excellent idea for inspiration. Do you mind if I borrow it sometime? Just the challenge, not your picture...

When I hear someone say they give "110%" to whatever they're doing, it makes me feel good inside, because I know I'm not as big a moron as that person is.

Indeed... and I guess I should be 'me' more often than I do, but the world dictates otherwise. Thanks for the comment, appreciated.

Thank you, I'm glad it comes across with a personal touch. And Pixelbrush is a digital art forum run by *henning and *Kyena - a great place to get honest feedback and encouragement on work if you happen to work digitally. If you do, feel free to drop by and share your work! But no, I don't mind you borrowing the theme at all, the more the merrier!

That is very nicely done, it's looks so realistic! The images in the wind are a nice touch too.

And the people who complain about Pocahontas being historically inaccurate can just shove it. It was intended for children who probably didn't even know she was a real person anyways. If I wanted an accurate account I'd watch the History Channel, not a Disney movie.
