Audacious Accomplishment ideas - Clarice 1 by Zephyri Audacious Accomplishment ideas - Clarice 1 by Zephyri
Working on ideas for my big illustration assignment as part of the Oatley Academy - we were asked to take scenes from a film and transpose the characters into an extra ordinary setting, so I set my heart on Silence of the Lambs, where Clarice Starling would be a priestess new to a the rank of Demon Hunter rather than FBI agent, and Lecter would be the demon she needs to get into the mind of, to catch the even more evil threat (Buffalo Bill).

I'm exploring stylistic choices here as well as costume choices, as I'm still trying to figure out where I'd like to push my art in terms of getting that something special I can call my own. Ultimately I have my favourites, but as ever, you guys have always been good with feedback so I'm open to ideas too!

I should also point out here that I envisage Starling as more of an HQ-based demon hunter.. the sort who doesn't leave the office much and is more research and questioning-based, so practicality is a lesser concern over looks (imagine if you will a less prudish, high fantasy female equivalent of the get up the priests of the vatican wear). I'm also trying to bring a little of my biggest inspiration, Brom, into my own work, in my own way, so if she feels a little sexier in some, that's a deliberate choice. :)

Hey! By all means feel free to work on or two of them up for details if you like. As long as the description wherever you post the piece links back to this original piece so people can find it, I'm happy. Ping me another comment when it's done so I can see too :)

Thanks! B3 and 4 are probably my faves of the lot, but B3 I might have to turn into some kind of master archer cause her outfit just says something more nimble than high priestess!

I think the middle row is my favorite in regards to style. They are all gorgeous, but the middle row is what sticks out the most! :D

I really like the designs but it'd be nice to see something without her chest being so exposed and/or emphasized.

I'll definitely be doing Lecter, as of the two scenes I've chosen to do one will feature him quite prominently, but I might do buffalo bill and catherine too at some point once these images are done!

Oh, wow. LOVING YOUR ASSIGNMENT, JUST SAYIN'!!! These designs are super dynamic and fun to look at. Kudos!!

And of course, the books/movies fanfiend in me is squeaking up a storm over these <3 I feel like B3 would definitely be something Clarice would pick for herself to run around demon hunting, but something like the other B-liners, A2 or C4 would be something she'd like to pull off. You know. If she wasn't always on the job. xD

I like B section a lot, especially B3. Does the red symbol mean anything? It looks a little like the red dragon symbol :D
I'm a huge fan of the books, and there's a lot of talk between her and Hannibal about her modesty vs. her need to feel classy. I think B3 is pretty modest (plus it'd be easier to demon hunt in XD), and B1, 2, and 4 are all excellent contenders for when Hannibal is dressing her up and playing mind games with her.
I also really like the shading in A section

Yeah I'm naturally more drawn to B since it comes the most naturally to me, and I totally didn't think of the red dragon when I did the symbol, but now you have me thinking! I've never read the books, so the insight into their conversations is super helpful, thank you!

I think the biggest "plot point" (I don't know if that's really what it is.. the biggest section of the books) that was left out of the movies is at the end of Hannibal, when Lecter basically holds Clarice hostage and drugs her up and plays weird games with her to convince her to "become" his sister (sort of... it's hard to explain). But Clarice, even in her haze, convinces him that she doesn't need to become Mischa because Mischa is a part of him.
Not like that's super important for clothing design, but I've always liked that part of the story because it really shows Clarice's true character without all of her fears and insecurities getting in the way. She's a strong lady, but she really comes into herself at the end of Hannibal.

These are gorgeous, I especially like A1 and A2, A2 is the very best, maybe because she looks more... aloof? Great work!

B3,B4,C4

not too provocative and actually looks like a mix of priestess/demon-hunter...
that and the three are easier, for me, to imagine culling a demon-style Lecter

In my opinion, B3 would work best for Clarice. I never sensed that she had a very "sexy and womanly" look, but more the functional kind of style (clothes you can easily run in for example). That's why I'd choose that one. It still is very impressive and mystic enough to fit a priestess, but easy to move in.

I'm very impressed by the variety of costumes you managed to create from one single idea. great job !

Thanks for the feedback - just updated the description as I realised I left out a fairly crucial piece of info - that being I'm trying to bring a little of Brom's aesthetic (ie a little darker and sexier) to this re-imagining, so she will still hopefully feel innocent through her face and body language, but I'm giving myself a little more design scope by not ruling out revealing either. But glad you like the designs anyway!

a1 and b3 are my favorites. . . very into b3. the long lace up front with the high boots is a nice pairing and seems more functional to the storyline your going with. i imagine being a demon hunter in some of the more flowing designs would be difficult. . . now that i think about it i like a4 too. i think the color scheme is lending to one of the better designs being less noticable. that drop panel corset belt is a sweet design. . .

Heheh.. I'm coming round to B3 myself, since it's not what I'd immediately think of as priestess-ish. Although I probably should have explained properly that the 'demon hunter' is more in the sense of a magic wielding holy order.... that she would be more the sort that doesn't leave HQ much, so practicality is less of a concern. Imagine a fantastical female equivalent of the vatican robes, if you will.
